Cold Commissioning

Objective

Aurora  Energy Services supported Wanzek at the Whistling Duck site in Williston,  Florida, delivering the cold commissioning of 12 × Sungrow SG4400 inverters  across Circuits 1A and 1B. The work scope, completed between August 3–6,  encompassed full mechanical, electrical, and visual verification of inverter  systems, auxiliary cabinets, and MV transformers. The project established a  safe, fault-free baseline for subsequent hot commissioning and long-term  operational reliability.

Challenges

  • Extended site orientation requirements before access.
  • High ambient temperatures impacting working conditions.

Solution

Aurora delivered a structured, three-phase solution:

  • Cold Commissioning Verification – Performed comprehensive inspections on inverter units, torque and termination checks, protective device validation, environmental     sealing, and Sungrow compliance confirmation. Ensured all grounding, safety systems, and lock-out/tag-out procedures were in place.
  • Controlled Hot Commissioning Preparation – Conducted DC voltage checks, calibrated protection  parameters, verified SCADA connectivity, and confirmed firmware status to streamline energization.
  • Handover Documentation & Integration – Recorded commissioning parameters, SCADA IP configurations, and firmware versions. Delivered complete documentation, as-built settings, and operational readiness sign-off for all 12 units.
  • Extended site orientation requirements before access.
  • High ambient temperatures impacting working conditions.

Value to Client

Aurora provided measurable value by ensuring all 12 inverters were fully “Ready-for-Hot-CX” with no outstanding safety holds.

  • Thorough Pre-Energization Verification – Comprehensive checks eliminated rework risks and provided a clean punch-list, saving time during hot commissioning
  • Risk Mitigation & Handoff – Verified all LOTO points, grounding plans, and interlocks to de-risk first energization, typically saving 1–2 shifts per inverter.
  • Expert Knowledge Transfer – Joint walk-downs with O&M staff provided clear expectations for hot commissioning and future operations.

Cold commissioning created a fault-free, fully documented foundation, enabling hot CX to proceed safely, quickly, and predictably—protecting both schedule and revenue for the client.
